If there’s one thing Rockstar nails, it’s scope. Their games might not be as ‘deep’ of role-playing games as their Bethesda counterparts, but they’re every bit as meaty and way more technically advance. If The Proposition ends up catching your eye, a neat tidbit about its director, John Hillcoat, is the fact that he created a machinima short film with Rockstar Games in the buildup to releasing Red Redemption in 2010, which was called Red Dead Redemption: The Man from Blackwater . The short film itself was created entirely inside the engine of Red Dead Redemption and was aired on FOX around the time of the game’s release – the full movie is still available for viewing here (via Dagger 323 on YouTube).
These moments, as small and inconsequential as they may seem compared to the larger story being told, were really what made Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s world and setting feel unlike anything that I’ve played before. As a game that’s been worked on by Rockstar for nearly 7-8 years — basically since the release of Red Dead Redemption in 2010 — the time and attention to detail put into its world and setting by the studio are on an unprecedented level. With the force of all of Rockstar’s teams behind it from around the world, the studio has called it their most “ambitious” project leading up to its release, and that might just be underselling it. Based on what I’ve played from the game so far, the level of interactivity, mechanics, and systems available to players make Red Dead Redemption 2 as close as we can get to the living, breathing Western world that Rockstar is aiming to deliver, and I can’t wait to explore more of it.
As a modern Western in the vein of recent classics like 3:10 to Yuma , The Proposition takes the essential elements of the Western genre and invigorates it with more contemporary filmmaking techniques and some particularly striking violence that pulls you into the experience. Aside from those similarities though, the mood and atmosphere that The Proposition captures feels very much in line with the way that Rockstar depicts its Western Open World games missions-world in the Red Dead games, and that feeling will only be expanded with the ways that Red Dead Redemption 2 (so far) seems to be delivering an even more striking and dynamic world to explore.
Aside from these characters that will lead you down interesting side paths in Red Dead Redemption 2 , you don’t necessarily have to limit your interactions with other NPCs in the world to just those that might be part of a story, as you can interact with any other person or animal in the game. Whether you greet them, rob them, or antagonize them, take the time to see what interesting quips, stories, or tales that the different folk you’ll meet around town might offer, and see what sort of surprises they may have in store for you.
As it currently stands, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2018, and it is also one of the biggest question marks. Aside from a few leaks and a relatively short teaser trailer, fans do not have a lot of information to go on. Towards the end of the trailer, fans are treated to a voice-over while images of an oil plant going up in flames fills the screen.
