The Cost of Nothing: Free-To-Play Games Are Changing the Industry

This one is simpler, because the format means that they’ll have to be different. The DCEU Justice League is looking to be inspired purely from the comics – a coming-together of all the most iconic members who’ll most likely be tangling with big-name villains in the way we’ve come to expect from superhero movies. One big plot, followed by a one big CGI fight sc

MOBA Basics: a general overview to what the f@$k is going on in these games...While I never gave myself a decisive “no” to this rhetorical question, the concern still stands. While Legend of Solgard offers a comprehensive, joyful gaming experience, it also finds itself in the same identity crisis that other mid-core titles find themselves in. Despite being fun and easy to start, Legend of Solgard feels at times like it casts too wide a net. Casual players with less gaming experience will likely find the game’s RPG elements and eventually tough turn-based skirmishes uninviting, while veteran gamers will likely find the game’s mobile nature, complete with different currencies, aesthetically unsavory. While Legend of Solgard certainly has something to offer for everyone, the reverse is also t

Many gamers’ first memories involve swapping a controller back and forth during the original Super Mario Bros. , or memorizing the fatality combos in Mortal Kombat . Today, young gamers are far more likely to remember being cussed out on Xbox Live. Multiplayer games have undergone a massive shift in recent decades. Compared to the cozy prevalence of couch co-op games in the 90s, very few games today include local multiplayer as an option. Online multiplayer games are the new standard, but when and why did this trend be

Distributors clearly have a lot to gain from online multiplayer games, especially with the popularity of microtransactions and the increasing popularity of DLC—more maps, more costumes, and more weapons often tempt gamers into paying more. This works well for free-to-play games like League of Legends or other MOBAs, but announcing DLC before a MOBA game meta Analysis‘s release often draws criticism. Many players argue that paid DLC encourages some developers to omit necessary or desired player content for higher prof

The TV universe has taken a different path due to the medium. It started with Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, though the series was relatively grounded at first with Oliver not even using his iconic name until much later. More fantastical elements began to creep in, until The Flash spinoff kicked off and __ became massively popular, and we started to meet more major players: Black Canary, The Atom, Mr Terrific, Hawkgirl and Hawkman, Vixen, Firestorm, Black Canary again, White Canary (that’s the first Black Canary, post-resurrection) and many, many more. Metahumans became big news, and we’ve even delved into alternate universes and magical artifa

When games made the leap from public arcades to private homes, multiplayer continued to be a prominent feature. In 1987, MIDI Maze for the Atari ST allowed players to play together with up to 16 people. Many NES games also incorporated multiplayer—the original Super Mario Bros . allowed players to swap between Mario and Luigi, and Ice Climber allowed simultaneous co-op.Technology advancements allowed the inclusion of split-screen modes for racing games and shooters. It didn’t stop there. As games got more complex and began incorporating online play, LAN parties and internet cafes enabled gamers to play locally with friends, minus the risks of lag and other side effe

Despite having the hallmarks and aesthetic flourishes of a mobile game, Legend of Solgard feels strikingly more comprehensive than other titles that can fit into your pocket. After fighting the game’s first mini-boss, an ice creature that changes locations making him harder to hit, I was kind of amazed at the level of nuance present in the game’s design. At times Legend of Solgard feels more Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle than Bejeweled; it feels like a mobile game that was designed with the dedication of a full-fledged console game. Regardless of the wide net the game casts, it’s clear that anyone who genuinely enjoys playing turn-based strategy games will enjoy something about Legend of Solga

Other networks aside, the Legends of Tomorrow route seems more likely if we’re ever going to see the Justice League on the small screen. Some major players will get their own shows, while others will appear as important supporting characters. Picture a Superman series that has him mentored by Martian Manhunter or frequently teaming up with Green Lantern, or possibly a Wonder Woman show with her travelling to Gotham for one season and helping a mopey billionaire to lighten up a little. Not everyone needs their own show, and some might even need as little as a featured episode. Given that we’ve already got duplicate characters in the TV and movie worlds (the Flash, for example), this shouldn’t be too much of a prob

While the whole editorial staff contributed to our 2015 awards, we wanted to allow everybody the opportunity to publicly name their personal top 10 games of the year. While many did play the majority of releases in 2015, please remember that unlike our main awards, the editors are not naming the best games, but their personal favorites out of the selection they played.
